Moral Courage

Stand Your Ground – I Will Too – It Matters

Would you take food off another’s plate? Probably not. But at Priddy Manor where my mother-in-law now resides, taking food off another’s plate is a sign of dementia and mirror neuron damage. Researchers found these neurons predict our decision making in moral dilemmas. And allow us to empathize and see ourselves in others and are the seat of the adage, “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

My name is Vivian Fulk. I am running for NC House District 91 and it’s time for moral action on education. By failing to fully fund North Carolina’s Public Schools in accordance with the North Carolina State Constitution, the NC GOP General Assembly supermajority is taking food off the plates of Stokes and Forsyth County’s poorest students. We are literally failing our children with a state metric report card of F in twenty schools just in these two counties.

I kept asking myself why are they doing this? Maurice “Mo” Green’s vision as candidate for NC Superintendent of Public Instruction is to “take care of everyone.” Whereas the GOP agenda is “we take care of our own.” They take the food off poor people’s plates and give opportunity scholarships to the rich. Is this moral? Of course not. It is time to take moral action on education and vote them out.

I started my engineering career at The Hastings Company in King at 21 years old. As a female working in a male-dominated field, I am keenly aware of the importance of providing STEM education in our public schools for girls and young women. My vision is to fully fund public schools which includes increasing teacher’s pay, codifying women’s rights, seeking environmental justice, securing voter’s rights, and standing for the peaceful coexistence of race, religion, and sexual orientation. When we damage the environment, we rob our children and grandchildren of the right to clean air and clean water. When we fail to treat women as equals, we rob them of their rightful places in the workplace and in an inclusive society.

I am a presenter and mentor with Al Gore’s “Climate Reality Project”. I studied interfaith philosophy and volunteered as project manager for Pope Francis’ climate crisis address to Congress in 2015. His quote “Hear the cry of the poor and hear the cry of the Earth” is my core value and the reason I am running for office.

As a Project Management Software Expert for 32 years, I consulted, traveled, and installed software and systems processes for fortune 100 companies. My experience instilled an on-time, on-budget mentality. Carrying these skills into our bureaucratic government will have its challenges but also valuable rewards.

A vote for me is a vote for moral action on education to fully fund public schools via the litigation already won with the Leandro case. I stand by North Carolina’s constitution.
